The brief

This North Yorkshire home already had the space and the shape for a proper kitchen. What it needed was the kitchen itself, designed and fitted to make the most of a bright, high-ceilinged room. The owners knew roughly the look they were after, calm, modern and easy to live in, and wanted it built to a standard that would still look right in ten years, not just on handover day.

What we did

We fitted handleless units in a soft grey, run in an L-shape around two walls with a central island. Going handleless keeps the whole thing clean and uninterrupted, which is exactly what a room like this wants. Nothing fighting for attention, just a run of quiet, well-made cabinetry.

The island is the heart of it. Topped in white quartz, it gives the owners a spot to perch with a coffee, somewhere for guests to gather, and a bit of extra prep space, without crowding the cook. We ran the same quartz along the worktops for a seamless finish, and set a marble-effect splashback behind the hob to lift the whole run.

That vaulted ceiling makes the room. With the roof lantern set into the slope and the light fittings dropped down over the island, the space feels open and airy in a way a flat ceiling never quite manages.

The herringbone floor was the finishing touch. Laid plank by plank in a wood-effect tile, it’s warm underfoot, hard-wearing enough for a busy kitchen, and it’s the kind of detail that quietly tells you a room’s been done properly. (Herringbone takes longer to lay than anyone expects. It’s always worth it.)

Behind the finish, this was a full fit-out. Cabinetry, worktops, integrated ovens and hob, extraction, sink and plumbing, lighting and all the setting out that makes the difference between units that are fitted and units that are fitted right.

The result

A calm, modern kitchen that suits the room it sits in and the people who use it. Somewhere to cook properly, sit with a drink, and have people round, finished to a standard built to last.
